Summer Work Crew Information

The deadline for submitting applications for the 2020 Summer Work Crew Program was April 3.  Thanks to everyone who applied!  The park is no longer accepting applications for this summer’s program.

  • Obtain valuable paid work experience
  • Gain new skills and knowledge
  • Each year 24 people are selected to participate in one of the two month long sessions
  • Program is administered and operated by Bass Lake Park in Holly Springs, NC


  • If a son, daughter or grandchild of a Town of Holly Springs Parks and Recreation employee is selected for this program, they may participate, but will not be paid

Job Description

  • Learn hands on skills while participating in general park maintenance and selected park projects
  • Opportunities for team-building and leadership development
  • Community service projects with local businesses and non-profits
  • Work hours are typically 8am – 3pm, Monday – Friday
  • Pay is $4.25/hour (youth minimum wage) with direct deposit every two weeks.  The participant must have a checking or savings account in their name

Job Requirements

  • Must be between the ages of 14 and 16 by session start date
  • Have the ability to work outside for up to an 8-hour day, lift up to 40 lbs, work with others and follow instructions
  • Must arrange own transportation to and from Bass Lake Park each day
  • Must be able to commit to entire four-week session.  Time off for vacation, other extracurricular activities, etc. is not permitted


To Apply, Please Submit:

  • A completed Town of Holly Springs Summer Work Crew Employment Application
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from a local reference.  Teachers, counselors, instructors, past or current employers are all examples of acceptable references.  Letters from family members will not be accepted
  • An essay of no less than 1000 words explaining reasons for wanting to participate in this program, as well as your personal short and long term life goals.  Essay should be printed with 1” margins, double spaced and in 12pm Times New Roman font.  Please do not exceed 2000 words
  • Write the following statement at the bottom of your essay and sign your name:

“The above essay is my own original work and was written honestly without the assistance or influence of others.”


Application, essay and letters of recommendation must all be submitted together* either by mail or in person to:

*Letters of recommendation must be included in package.  No letters faxed or mailed separately will be accepted

Information Packets:

  • Visit the Town of Holly Springs website under Bass Lake Park and print off information packet
  • Follow all directions carefully
  • Incomplete application packets will not be accepted
  • Submit application starting Monday, February 10, 2020 at 8am
  • Application packets must be received before 5pm on Friday, April 3, 2020 at Bass Lake Park
  • There are no exceptions for incomplete or late applications


  • Session 1: Monday, June 15, 2020 through Friday, July 10, 2020 (No work on July 3rd)
  • Session 2: Monday, July 13, 2020 through Friday, August 7, 2020


  • You will be expected to work the entire 4-week session
  • There are no exceptions for vacations, school activities, dentist appointments, doctor appointments, etc. 
  •  If you are unable to fulfill your work commitment, you will be replaced with the next eligible candidate  
  • There is a maximum of 12 participants in each session  
  • July 3rd is a Town holiday and Summer Work Crew participants will not work that day


  • 14 – 16 years old only
  • Applicant must be 14 by the start of the program
  • Must not be 17 by the start of the program

Hours of Work:

  • 8am – 3pm, Monday through Friday
  • On Thursdays participants will work off-site at a local farm in the morning and then with a local non-profit in the afternoon


  • $4.25/hour (youth minimum wage)
  • Work experience to list on your next job application or resume
  • Pay periods are every two (2) weeks
  • You will be paid by direct deposit into a checking or savings account
  • You are responsible for your own time sheet

Work Involved:

  • Building trails
  • Mulching
  • Planting
  • Pruning
  • Clearing brush
  • Re-establishment of riparian buffers and wetlands
  • Lots of other outside work
  • All work is done outside
  • Power tools will not be used by participants


  • Each participant needs to bring their own lunch
  • You will receive 30 minutes in which to each and/or rest


  • Breaks will be taken as needed during the heat
  • Drinking water will always be available


  • Interviews will begin April 18, 2020
  • Every applicant will be contacted to schedule an interview
  • Notification of acceptance or rejection will be made by Friday, May 15, 2020

 Other Information:

 You should bring work gloves, a hat, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, insect repellent, lunch, closed toe shoes (sandals or open shoes are not allowed) or any other items you may need

  • Please arrive a little early so that you are ready to begin work at 8am; tardiness may result in dismissal

Important Dates:

 February 10, 2020 through April 3, 2020 – Application packages accepted

Application packages must be received at Bass Lake Park by 5:00pm on Friday, April 3, 2020.  This date and time are firm.  No late or partial application packages will be accepted.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

  • April 18, 2020 – First date for interviews
  • April 25, 2020 – Second date for interviews
  • May 15, 2020 – Notifications of acceptance or rejection will be mailed by this date
  • June 15 through July 10, 2020 – Session 1 Summer Work Crew in progress (No work on July 3rd)
  • July 13 through August 7, 2020 – Session 2 Summer Work Crew in progress
