Woods Creek Elementary to Open 2024

The Town Council has approved plans for Woods Creek Elementary School, which is scheduled to open in 2024 adjacent to the 400-acre Carolina Springs development coming to northwestern Holly Springs.

The Council granted variances and waivers to various design standards for the three interconnected buildings without objection.

With so many homes to be built nearby, however, Council members expressed safety concerns since plans do not include a sidewalk in front of the school. Ordinarily, Town development regulations would require it.

But state law exempts school systems from funding such road improvements. The $500,000 cost estimate was provided to Town staff so that the sidewalk could be considered as a possible Town project.

Wake County Public Schools representatives told the Council that they expect Woods Creek Elementary to be a traditional calendar school, although that could change with opening more than three years away. In 2023, the school will be used as Baucom Elementary while that school is renovated.

An adjoining middle school also is planned, although the school system has not yet submitted plans for it. School system representatives said the campuses could share parking during large events outside school hours.

Also at its Feb. 16, meeting, the Town Council approved the development plan for the Rhamkatte Plaza commercial site at the intersection of Holly Springs and Bass Lake roads. The plan is for three buildings with a mix of office and retail uses.

The Council also approved a change in the streetscape buffer along the Rhamkatte Village development. The main reason the trees that will be planted to crepe myrtles due to Duke Energy height limits for trees beneath power lines.

In other action, Council members approved an agreement with the N.C. Department of Transportation for relocating water and sewer lines as part of the Interstate 540 extension project.
