Discovery Backpacks
Step into the Visitor Center and sign out a Discovery Backpack on your next hike around our trail. This free program allows Park visitors to sign out a backpack to learn about a large array of different nature topics relating to local themes. Discover all of the different options below as well as sign out your backpack!
Discovery Backpack Choices
- Bass Lake Bird Discovery - Learn about the park’s feather friends. This backpack includes binoculars, field guides, and a fun way to learn common bird calls.
- Bass Lake Insect Discovery - Have a close encounter with some of the park's smaller wildlife. Use a bug-catching net and bug jars to closely examine the park's resident arthropods. You can also challenge yourself with a fun scavenger hunt.
- Bass Lake Aquatic Life Discovery - There’s more than fish living in our lake! Use a dip net and magnifying glass to discover what other creatures live in our waters.
- Bass Lake Tree Discovery - Leave the boredom at home and use our tree ID guide and FANDEX to learn more about Bass Lake’s woody plants! This backpack also contains nature-watch cards, a FUNDANA activity, and a Trees, Leaves, and Bark book.
- Bass Lake Rocks & Fossils - Rock it out with our identification boxes of minerals and gems then look for some of these that can be found on our trails. Afterward, park staff will open the park's fossil and gems box for you to dig in. Participants will be able to take home one fossil and one gem specimen.
- Bass Lake Animal Tracking - Even if you do not see wildlife while walking our trails, you can find evidence that wildlife leaves behind. Learn how to identify tracks, scat, and more "signs" of the wildlife that call Bass Lake home.
- Bass Lake Nature Journaling - Practice your observation skills and use your creativity with this nature journaling kit. You'll find everything you need to express yourself and capture the beauty found in nature. This backpack includes chalk pastels, watercolor pencils, pencils, and paper!
