Urban Forestry

The Town of Holly Springs provides care and maintenance of the town's public trees and street trees. The Town’s public tree program includes planting, removal and maintenance of trees located on public property and in street rights-of-way. The program is administered by Development Services, in cooperation with the Parks & Recreation and Public Works Departments, and the Holly Springs Tree Advisory Committee.

Tree City USA

Holly Springs is seeking the designation as a Tree City USA. The Tree City USA program is a nationwide movement that guides communities to manage and expand their public trees. Tree Advisory Committee

The recently formed Holly Springs Tree Advisory Committee is here to provide public information initiatives helping residents understand the importance and need for tree preservation and maintenance.  The Tree Advisory Committee plans an annual Arbor Day event.

Tree Care Tips

Identify your tree. There are many online resources to help identify the species of trees or a nursery can help identify the tree by a leaf sample and a photograph.

Different trees = Different care. Each species of tree requires different care, planting needs, lighting, and soil. Taking care to plant trees properly can save on care in the future.

Protect tree roots with mulch. Mulch help keep soil moist, control weed growth, reduces soil erosion, and can release nutrient into the as if organic mulch is used. Keep the mulch at a depth of 2” – 4” inches and aerate to keep it from becoming compacted.

Annual check-up. Check for health issues or weaknesses can be caught early on with an annual inspection. Prune broken branches to protect your property from potential damage.

Food and drink. Amend the soil with organic or synthetic fertilizers to help provide the tree with proper nutrients for healthy growth. When planted correctly, a tree typically only requires water for its first growing season. Once established, fertilizing in the fall is recommended. During dry spells and the summer months, trees may require additional.  Water trees slowly and for a long duration.  Trees drink from their roots. 

Prune. Pruning promotes even and healthy development of trees.
