The Town of Holly Springs is implementing an Intelligent Transportation System that uses smart technology to help mitigate congestion. Holly Springs is teaming up with NCDOT to tap into the Town's existing fiber network, use special cameras for real-time monitoring, and upgrade software to allow remote adjustments to the signals for better traffic flow.
Getting traffic signals connected with each other and capable of being remotely monitored will reduce signal downtime and congestion for commuters in Holly Springs and the entire region. Currently, when a signal issue is noticed, a complaint must be filed so NCDOT can send workers into the field to investigate.
The Intelligent Transportation System is another way of alleviating traffic backups, beyond the high costs of widening major roadways, most of which are controlled by NCDOT, along with almost all traffic signals.
Status:
Benefits of the project should be seen beginning in 2026 when the State will be able to remotely diagnose and correct signal issues.
More About the Project
The Town of Holly Springs was chosen by NCDOT to be a pilot for the entire State and was awarded over $2 million in federal funding for the Intelligent Transportation System project. The decision is a result of the Town’s fiber system, which Holly Springs began to install over a decade ago. The fiber system enabled the Town to qualify for the project, bringing traffic signal timing adjustments to Holly Springs three years earlier than scheduled by the State.
The Intelligent Transportation System project involved completing the installation of traffic monitoring cameras, which will enable real-time visibility of traffic conditions and enhance traffic data collection, and updating software.
